RECOLLECTIONS:

1. When a child, as he would walk home from school down Greenville St. and he turned onto Spence Avenue which led to his home, "Grandpa Smith", as he knew him, lived in the first house on Spence on the left (see picture in Document file). (This was Andrew Jackson Smith, second husband of his grandmother, Nancy (Arnold) (Brook) Smith, widow of his grandfather, James Brook, casualty in the Civil War). "Grandpa Smith" would usually be on the porch of the house and, upon seeing his grandson, would shout "Hey, Theo, come on over and let's see if I've got something for you". This "something" was usually a favorite candy and this old Confederate veteran made certain his grandchild went homeward with his pockets full. One can only surmise at the comments he received at home from his mother about "ruining his dinner". What a tender picture this is, of this aged and proud veteran of many bloody and desperate scenes, lovingly spending this time with his young grandson. What planning this took and the anticipation on the porch!
He also recalls that his "Grandpa Smith" had a long white beard which came down about to his waist which seemed a common style for Confederate veterans at this time, from looking at photographs taken at Soldier reunions.

SAYINGS & THINGS:

1. "It takes all kinds (of people) to make the world go 'round."

3. "Any jackass can kick a barn down."

4. "It isn't as important how much money you make as it is what you do with the money you do make".

3. No obituary was printed in the Atlanta newspapers & only a brief one in the Augusta newspaper.

4. Personal reminiscences by Betty (Sams) Martin, September 2001:
Her brothers, Theo and Gene, had a pet squirrel named "Billy" which was tame, but it bit Mary once, which she remembered later in life. Theo and Gene would pick Mary up by her ears and it made her furious, as one might expect.
When her father James was alive, I think mother said he was Sheriff of Carroll County and he also took care of the farm. They had a bull on the farm and her mother Pearl (Upshaw) Brooke, in an effort to keep mother safe from harm, scared her severely of going into the bull's pasture. They also had a pond and she scared Mary of the pond also and mother was afraid of water her entire life and never learned to swim.
Mother was only 10 years old when her father died and her family sold the farm and moved to Atlanta at 1726 McLendon Ave. Her mother took in sewing and all mother's older brothers and sisters helped support the family. Mother remembered that Theo was so brilliant and such a good athelete that he received a college scholarship which he could not accept. At this time the Great Depression had begun and he declined the scholarship in order to help support the family.
They lived on McLendon Avenue and, as a young lady, mother used to sit outside on the front lawn every afternoon and that's how she and daddy met. Daddy was attending Georgia Tech and was working as their newspaper delivery boy. However, after they started "seeing" each other, mother apparently began to have second thoughts about their relationship and I have a large stack of love letters daddy wrote to convince her otherwise. About the same time daddy was in a car accident and was in the hospital. Mother said it scared her so much, she knew she loved him and they were married in 1937.
After they married they lived in a rented apartment for a bried period and owned an old DeSoto automobile. Then they lived with her sister Sally (Brooke) Greenaway and her husband Bob briefly. Mother worked at Scripto as a secretary and heard the company was looking for a bright young engineer. She arranged for daddy to have an interview and he got the job. Then she quit her job and Bill was born in 1939; I was was born in 1942 and Bob was born in 1952.
During World War II mother raised chickens and had a garden in the back yard of 17 East Lake Drive in Atlanta. They owned a Buick then but, since gasoline was rationed, they only drove it around the block on Sunday mornings. Daddy took public transportation to work.
The only eggs we had were those mother's hens laid in the backyard chicken coop. Daddy killed one chicken every Sunday and mother served fried chicken for the noon-day meal, after the drive around the block. The only meat we had was mother's chickens, Spam, and ground beef when the neighborhood grocery had it available. Word spread quickly when the neighborhood grocer was expecting a shipment of ground beef. Mother would get us up before dawn and take us to Colonial Grocery Store on East Lake Drive where we stood outside in the dark until the store opened, when it was "first come, first served". Although she was always one of the first there, she could only buy her rationed amount.
The only other problem we had the leather rationing for shoes. Since Bill and I, as children, were outgrowing shoes every few months, we used up all the shoe rations while mother and daddy wore the same pair of shoes throughout the entire war years.
