COMMENTS:
1. I have no proof that Richard Manary was the father of Edward; it is thought by some researchers, including Linda Teichman, that "Ignacious & "Horseshoe Mary" Manary were his parents; more research is needed in Charles City Co, MD.
2. It is uncertain whether the correct spelling of this surname is "Manary" or "Manery"; can someone clarify?

At first I believed Andrew Wright Torbert was son of William Torbet and Rachel Wright. I still do not have enough proof but other researchers believe he was a son of Samuel Torbert, Jr., and Rachel Wright.
Samuel and Rachel may never have come to Tennessee but three of their children came to Monroe and McMinn Co. in the early 1830s. Their children are: 1. Samuel Cherry (24 Oct 1789 Ga-22 Aug 1855) Thomaston, Upson, Ga.) m. Mary; 2. John (27 Dec 1791 Abbeyville(sic), SC-7 Jan 1882 McM. Co. Tn.) m. Sarah then Elizabeth. 3. First land records show Andrew Wright Torbert in 1834 at Madisonville Court House. I have not found him in the 1830 census. Their home stood where Lowry's store is or, rather, was. He carried mail between Madisonville and Sweetwater, Monroe Co., Tn. Sent to me was the original deed of 1862 when Andrew gave Negro slave to his daughter Minerva Peck. For Andrew and Nancy no marriage record has been found. Their children are: 1. Emily Josephine (27 Oct 1831-12 May 1904)m. ca 1847 to Lewis Hunt, both buried Madisonville City Cemetery; 2. Minerva Ann (24 Mar 1833-18 Nov 1866) m. 28 June 1858 to Joseph Alexander Peck, both buried Sink Cemetery, Tellico Plains, Monroe Co., Tn.; 3. Sarah E. (22 Jun 1836-11 Oct 1874) Loudon Co, Tn., and buried Madisonville City Cemetery, m. Col. Wesley C.P. Jones. (submitted by: Katrina Jean Semones, 3rd great granddaughter of Andrew W. Torbert; compiled by: Mary Louise Hunt Semones, P.O. Box 658, Etowah, NC 28729).
COMMENTS:1. His house in Madisonville stood where Lowry's store now is;
(per R. E. Torbert, 1985)2. Early land plats of McMinn/Monroe cos, TN, shows:
In township four, range two east of meridian:
John Torbert (anc of Shirley Harper) had land in section 6 & 7
(McMinn Co), and Peter Upshaw has contiguous land purchased in 1820 &
1827. Also in twp 4 in section 33, Drury Upshaw received land in 1825.RESEARCHERS & CORRESPONDENTS:

COMMENTS:
1. Middleton Upshaw had no military service or pension for any military service.
2. Lived in Tallapoosa Co, AL, from 1860s to 1883 (need to check Tallapoosa Co, AL, deeds for exact dates).
3. Need to search 1883 newspapers and the New Hope Baptist Church minutes (if they survive) for a possible obituary of him which may contain more biographical information.
4. The only other possibility for the father of Middleton, other than Forrester Upshaw, is Richard Upshaw Sr., son of Leroy Upshaw (RS). Richard Upshaw Sr. had a male under 10 years old in his household in 1820 Elbert Co., page 162. Also, in 1830 Walton Co, GA, census, page 158, Richard Upshaw has 1 male born 1815-1820. Richard Upshaw Sr. evidently died in Walton Co., GA, between 1830 & 1840, although no estate or other evidence of his death has been found.

22. Family tradition is that Amelia died as a result of being kicked by a cow she was milking when the rest of the family was away, as she could barely see, probably resulting from cataracts. This was told to Mr. Joe Mathis, Waller, TX (desc of Amelia) by his grandfather John Franklin Dobbs.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
1. Peter Dobbs: He has no military service in the War of 1812 or Indian Wars. When Peter Dobbs remarried between 1850 & 1860, who was that to, when & where? Are there any clues about Amelia in that situation? What about Peter's late life - where & when did he die? Dis he leave a will or estate record? Is there an obituary for him? There is no War of 1812 pension application found for Peter or Amelia/Milly Dobbs.

COMMENTS:
1. It is not certain that Mary ("Polly") Upshaw is daughter of Parson Upshaw; it is only circumstantial at this point, as Parson was the only Upshaw of the correct age to be her father, who was in the immediate area of Blount County, although we have never found Parson actually in Blount County, Tennessee about 1820. We only know that he was in Roane Co, TN, shortly before 1811. Additional research is underway either to locate some mention of Parson in Blount Co. in 1819-1821, or to find obituary for Mary (Upshaw) Starr which might give more information.

"During these ten years (1830-1840) there may have been a number (about 5) of births & deaths (of children) as I have been told my grandfather had a total of 17 children by his two wives".COMMENTS:
1. His middle name was likely "Washington", although I don't belive it has ever been proven. There is a possibility that his son, George W. Upshaw Jr. may have spelled his middle name out, with "Jr.", which would be proof of "Washington".
